5 Ways to Politely Decline a Handshake in our Post-Pandemic World

Meeting people in our post-pandemic world can be awkward when someone leans in for a hug or handshake. Here are five ways to politely decline a handshake.

1) Say "Air High-Five" and just pretend to give eachother a high-five. This is great for workout partners and sports. It helps to make it "fun" and not as awkward.

2) Greet people with the "Stop, Drop, and Nod". As you approach someone stop, put your hands at your sides (or slightly behind your back) and nod once to acknowledge the person in front of you. This is similar to a curtsy.

3) As someone comes toward you to say hello, you can do the "Clasp and Greet". This is where you cup your hands together in front of you and say "hello". With your hands together it sends the message that you are not extending your hands but are still saying "hello".

4) If you know someone pretty well, you can put your hands up a little and say "I'm not shaking hands right now, sorry buddy!"

5) Lastly, if you really want a little touch that avoids the hands, lean in with your elbow. If you do it early enough, the person you are approaching has time to get their elbow ready too!
